‘THE LINE BETWEEN EXPRESSION’

“I’m not an abstractionist. I’m not interested in the relationship of colour or form or anything else. I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on.”
Mark Rothko

Inspired by the work of Mark Rothko and early 90s commercial grunge, for Autumn Winter 2016 Lantern Sense present a collection embodying the dissatisfaction of life and nonchalance towards the world surrounding them expressed by the artist and latter movement.

The collection consists of clean and intentionally boxy tailored separates representative of the artist’s work. Oversized asymmetric woollen scarves come with tassel fringing, skirts and trousers joined with custom made safety pins and jackets embellished with heavy duty jump-rings and eyelets. Fresh floral accessories accompany the collection as a direct response to the main reference Mark Rothko, using flowers is one of the most traditional ways to express human emotion.

Textures are key to the mood of the collection with patent leather, treated faux leather and shearling contrasting with knits and delicate sequins. A colour palette of soft grey, cream, peach and beige are cleverly juxtaposed with bright red, burgundy, browns and a sober black.

EDITOR’S NOTES

Founded in Hong Kong in 2014 by Trevor Ng and Lala Yang, Lantern Sense is a contemporary womenswear label that fuses the ideologies of the designers. Ng’s extensive knowledge of tailoring paired with a mutual love of philosophy, digital painting and photography has resulted in a collection with clean and refined cuts, interesting prints and a simplistic modernity.

Lantern Sense take pride in the craftsmanship used in their collections combining luxurious materials with innovative techniques to ensure there is a definitive level of design in the finer details.  In a few short seasons the label has gathered not only international recognition as a brand to watch but also an impressive array of leading retailers stocking the collection.

AW16 sees the brand’s debut at London Fashion Week within the city that the designers feel best conveys their design ethos, with multicultural heritage and an underlying beauty steeped within overtones of chaos.
